The nose is soft, subtle, and woodsy, conjuring pine, mint, and cedar in addition to dried pineapple and chocolate wafers. Theres more chocolate on the palate, plus well-balanced cinnamon spice. Overall, it is creamy and sweet, like the milk left over from a bowl of Cocoa Puffs or Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Kit Kat bar on a lengthy finish punctuates this nicely.
Bardstown Bourbon Company’s Fusion releases continue to be some of the best and most intersting bottlings coming out of Kentucky. The company is in a unique position – they’ve built a distilling empire in short order and seem to have unlimited access to superb older stocks from Kentucky in particular (helps to know a few people and be headed up by Steve Nally, long time master distiller at Maker’s Mark). This has allowed them to make some extremely compelling blends of their own young distillate and older KY Bourbons. Each release has done an exemplary job of showcasing BBCs quality while never feeling too young or out of whack. In short, the blending is perfect. Fusion #7 is no different – this Kentucky Straight Bourbon is 30% 12 year old KY Bourbon from 2 different mashbills. The remaining 70% of the whiskey is 3 year old BBC juice from 3 different mashbills.

The younger whiskeys are Bardstown’s own 3-year-old spirits with 3 distinct mash bills. The first bourbon accounts for 54% of the blend and features a mash bill of 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malted barley. The second is crafted with 60% corn and 40% rye, while the third has a 4-grain recipe of 60% corn, 26% rye, 10% wheat, and 4% malted barley. The remaining 30% of the components are distributed between 2 sourced Kentucky whiskeys, both 12 years of age. Bottled at 98.1 proof, the younger spirit comes together in perfect harmony with the sourced mature whiskeys, resulting in a vibrant, complex, and elegant expression that’s a worthy addition to the sought-after series.
