Mont de Milieu is a Premier Cru climat on the eastern banks of the Serein river in the Chablis wine region. Here, a southerly aspect and dry, limestone-rich soils have given a terroir that is considered one of the best Premier Crus in Chablis, producing an age-worthy, Chardonnay-based wine that is elegant, floral and racy.
The 44 hectare (108 acre) vineyard is located on a south-facing crescent of gently sloping land, forged over many centuries by the small Crioux river a minor tributary of the Serein. It lies just a mile or so from the center of Chablis town, immediately south of the Montee de Tonnerre Premier Cru vineyard, and a little way north of Vaucoupin.
Mont de Milieu’s favorable terroir is often compared to that of the Grand Cru sites. Both share a similar southerly exposure to sunlight, which aids ripening in the cool north Burgundian climate.
This way, grapes have time to develop rich flavor concentration, while still retaining the acidity that is so essential to Chablis wines.
