Erwin Poller’s family has been farming grapes and making wine in the Weinviertel, northeast Austria, for 300 years. Frau Mayer is Poller’s top grner veltliner, from a tiny 65-year old vineyard with granite soils. Frau Mayer gave this special vineyard to Poller with the stipulation that she got to drink as many bottles from each subsequent vintage as she wanted to!
Organic farming. Indigenous fermentation in fuder (larger, usually oval-shaped barrels) made from acacia wood. Aging on the lees for 9-10 months. The label is a classic, old wallpaper design that according to Poller expresses the quality and the time of Frau Mayer herself. 13% alcohol. This is fantastic grner veltliner, with real depth, leesiness, saltiness, minerality, and length. Drink it with green and peppery things – artichokes, asparagus, green beans, favas, Asian-spiced dishes, green chile posole.
