Don Q 151 Rum. Destilera Seralls, Ponce, Puerto Rico a high-proof blend of heavy and light Puerto Rican rums each aged a minimum of three years, bottled at 75.5% ABV as a more flavorful, matured alternative to standard overproof rums that forgo any aging.

Destilera Seralls has been distilling rum in Ponce, on Puerto Rico’s southern coast, since 1865. The Seralls family emigrated from Catalonia to Puerto Rico and established their distillery during the golden age of Puerto Rican sugar production, when the island was among the world’s leading sugar-producing regions. Today the distillery continues to produce rum under the Don Q brand named for Don Quixote, a nod to the family’s Spanish heritage and supplies a substantial portion of the rum used in Bacardi products as well as their own full range of expressions.

Don Q 151 is distinguished from other overproof rums by its commitment to aging before proof. Where many 151 rums are made from young or unaged spirits and simply bottled at high proof for cocktail use, Don Q 151 begins with a blend of heavy pot-still rum and light column-still rum, both aged a minimum of three years in American white oak barrels. That aging adds genuine complexity vanilla, oak, subtle toffee, and a hint of smoke that is detectable even at the intense 151 proof. The result is an overproof rum that can be sipped responsibly diluted, used as a powerful cocktail base, or floated on top of drinks for dramatic effect.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Bold and assertive at 151 proof. Vanilla and oak from the aging, with caramel and tropical fruit underneath. Light tobacco and smoke. Needs to breathe or be diluted to appreciate fully.
  • Palate: The 3-year aging is clearly present vanilla, oak, and a hint of toffee give structure beneath the intense warmth. Caramel and light tropical fruit. More character and complexity than most unaged 151 rums.
  • Finish: Long, warm, and dry. The oak and vanilla linger. A hint of smoke toward the close.

  • What cocktails work best with Don Q 151? Classic overproof applications: a Zombie (which traditionally calls for overproof rum), a Mai Tai float, a Dark and Stormy with the 151 floated on top, or a rum punch where the high proof accounts for dilution from mixers and ice.
  • Who makes Don Q rum? Destilera Seralls in Ponce, Puerto Rico a family-run distillery founded in 1865 by the Catalan Seralls family. Don Q is named for Don Quixote as a nod to the family’s Spanish heritage.
