Masseto 2017 is certainly a child of its vintage, that has managed to encapsulate all the ripeness and concentration of a particularly sunny and dry vintage. The colour is almost black, the nose reveals a rich and ripe expression of concentrated black fruit, withhints of spices and liquorice. On the palate the wine manages to combine great intensity and ripeness of fruit with a remarkable sense of balance and freshness. The tannins are densely knit, the texture velvety, the finish shows lingering fruitiness and a vibrant acidity giving a final touch of freshness. Although it comes from one of the warmest vintages, 2017 can be considered a very typical Masseto in its unmistakeable combination of richness and elegance.
It is a role model for viticulture in Italy, especially in Tuscany, and a brand that need not fear comparison with the world’s greatest wine houses. We are talking about Ornellaia. The importance of this picturesque winery in Bolgheri has been growing for years. Between 2007 and 2013, wines from the estate were a safer investment than gold. The price fluctuations were also comparatively low. This was the result of a study by the auction house Sotheby’s and Liv-Ex, an international wine exchange in London. The exceptional Tuscan estate was founded in 1981 by Lodovico Antinori. Mondavi later took over the majority of the capital. Today, the estate belongs to the Florentine Frescobaldi family. Ornellaia’s products are enjoyed in 60 countries around the world, with an export quota of around 30 per cent. Deliveries are made to prestigious customers and important collectors. Demand regularly far exceeds bottle production.
