Mocambo 20 Year Art Edition Rum. Licores Veracruz, Veracruz, Mexico a hand-numbered, individually unique bottle wrapped in bark fibers from the Amate tree by Mexican artist Maestro Vctor Fernndez Limn, containing a 20-year single barrel Mexican rum aged at 900 meters above sea level in European white oak one of the most visually distinctive bottles in the spirits world.
Licores Veracruz has been producing spirits in the Mexican state of Veracruz for over six decades. Veracruz is Mexico’s oldest rum-producing region sugarcane cultivation has thrived in its humid, subtropical coastal climate since the colonial era, and the state’s sugar estates grow cane that is hand-mashed rather than machine-processed in Mocambo’s pre-Hispanic production approach. The rum is distilled from a combination of molasses and sugarcane juice in column and pot stills, then aged in single barrels of European (Spanish) white oak rather than the American oak bourbon barrels used by most Caribbean producers. European white oak imparts a fundamentally different character: drier, more tannic, with less vanilla and caramel and more spice, leather, and dried fruit depth.
At 900 meters above sea level in a humid subtropical climate, the aging conditions are unique not the tropical heat of Caribbean coastal warehouses, but the cooler, drier mountain air of highland Veracruz. The Amate tree fiber bottle wrap is not just decoration: each bottle is a handmade art object by Maestro Vctor Fernndez Limn, individually numbered, and no two are identical.
