Plantation Guatemala XO Rum. Cognac Ferrand / Maison Ferrand, Guatemala a single-origin Guatemalan XO rum with a distinctively elegant profile built around dominant tonka bean notes alongside coconut, coffee, honey, hazelnut, and cinnamon, double-aged first in Guatemala then in ex-cognac casks at Chateau de Bonbonnet, France.

Guatemala is one of Central America’s finest rum-producing nations a tradition built on high-altitude highland sugarcane, slow tropical aging, and a production philosophy that produces among the smoothest and most refined rums in the Americas. The country’s most famous rum families produce Spanish-style column still rums that are prized for their elegance and depth, and Plantation’s single-country XO Guatemala showcases those qualities through the Cognac Ferrand double-aging lens.

The rum is aged first in Guatemala in ex-bourbon casks, developing its Guatemalan base character, then transported to Chateau de Bonbonnet in Cognac where it matures in former cognac casks for secondary aging. The French oak and cognac residuals add the complexity that distinguishes the XO tier from Plantation’s everyday expressions. The result is an elegant, refined sipping rum with a unique flavour signature anchored by tonka bean a complex aromatic of vanilla, almond, cherry, and spice that no other Caribbean or Central American rum origin consistently produces.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Very elegant tonka bean dominates, blended with coconut, coffee, honey, hazelnut, and cinnamon. Warm, complex, and distinctive aromatics unlike any other single-origin rum.
  • Palate: The profile evolves from the nose into pineapple, cherry, and citrus alongside the continuing tonka bean, coconut, and hazelnut. Medium body with excellent balance between fruit and spice.
  • Finish: Long and warm with the tonka bean and spice signature carrying through. Dried fruit and a touch of cognac-cask influence on the close.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Plantation Guatemala XO taste like? Tonka bean dominates the nose alongside coconut, coffee, honey, hazelnut, and cinnamon. The palate evolves to pineapple, cherry, and citrus. Long, warm finish with lingering tonka bean and spice.
  • What is tonka bean? Tonka bean is a complex aromatic seed from South America with a flavor profile combining vanilla, almond, cherry, and subtle spice sometimes described as a richer, more multifaceted vanilla. It appears naturally in some aged Guatemalan and Central American rums and is a distinctive signature of this origin.
  • How does Guatemala compare to other Plantation single-origin XOs? Guatemala XO is more refined and spice-forward than the fruitier Barbados XO, and less earthy than the Trinidad single-vintages. The tonka bean dominance gives it a unique identity that no other single origin in the Plantation range replicates.
  • How should I serve Plantation Guatemala XO? Neat at room temperature or over a single ice cube to appreciate the tonka bean aromatics. Also excellent in a rum Old Fashioned where the spice signature complements the bitters beautifully.
