Sotol is a Mexican spirit made from dasylirion, a genus of desert spoon plant, particularly in Chihuahua, north of the country. After a troubled domestic history, the product is becoming more popular across Mexico, and a few brands are now visible in export markets.
Sotol Curados are also produced to be drunk like a liqueur after dinner, these sweeter bottlings are flavored with raisins, cinnamon, or pecans. Both sweet and dry versions may be infused with herbs and botanicals the slightly sweet Elixir is a better-known example with 27 ingredients including marijuana.
Some rural sotoleros even use beef, snake venom, or sometimes snake flesh in their dry sotols. Such beverages may stem from old health practices, but also from methods for sharing meager food resources.
