Rhum Clement XO Vieux Rhum Agricole. Habitation Clement, Le Franois, Martinique aged a minimum of six years in a combination of virgin and re-charred oak barrels, producing a beautiful dark mahogany color with a beautifully smoky aroma and long lingering finish, accentuated by intense charred wood flavors balanced by the natural sweetness of the sugarcane distillate and displaying some of the finest floral notes and pure character of the Clement cellar.

XO (Extra Old) in the Clement range designates a minimum six-year aged Rhum Vieux Agricole a step above the VSOP’s four-year minimum and the range’s most complex regularly available expression below the Cuve Homre. The combination of virgin and re-charred oak barrels brings complementary influences: fresh virgin oak provides vanilla, dried fruit, and structured tannin from wood that has never previously held a spirit; re-charred bourbon casks add the caramel, coconut, and spice dimension the Clement house style is known for across its aged range.

At six years in Martinique’s tropical climate, the wood extraction is substantial: the XO develops a dark mahogany color naturally from the cask, and the charred wood flavors that result are balanced by the inherent sweetness of the Habitation Clement sugarcane distillate the same fresh-pressed cane juice from the Domaine de l’Acajou estate that has been the foundation of Clement’s production since Homre Clement founded the operation in 1887.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Beautiful dark mahogany color. Beautifully smoky aroma with the finest floral notes and pure sugarcane character of the Clement cellar. The six years of combined oak influence creates significant aromatic complexity.
  • Palate: Intense charred wood flavors balanced by the natural sweetness of the sugarcane distillate. The virgin oak contributes structured tannin and dried fruit; the re-charred bourbon casks add caramel and spice. Exceptional balance between wood and cane.
  • Finish: Long and lingering. The XO’s greatest achievement is the length of its finish relative to its age statement six years of Martinique tropical aging in two cask types creates a finish that continues well past the close.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Clement XO taste like? Smoky and floral on the nose with dark mahogany color. Intense charred wood balanced by natural sugarcane sweetness on the palate. Long, lingering finish from six years across two cask types.
  • What is the difference between XO and Clement VSOP? VSOP (minimum 4 years) uses virgin Limousin barriques + re-charred bourbon casks for a refined, vanilla-and-dried-fruit profile. XO (minimum 6 years) uses virgin oak + re-charred bourbon for a smokier, wood-forward profile with greater depth and a longer finish. XO is for those who want more wood presence and complexity.
  • Why is it called XO? XO (Extra Old) is a designation from the cognac world adopted by some rum producers to indicate an extended aged expression above the VSOP level. For Clement, XO means a minimum six years aged under AOC Martinique Rhum Vieux rules a meaningful age statement in the Martinique context.
