The first-ever release beyond Ron del Barrilito’s traditional Two Star and Three Star expressions a one-of-a-kind blend of aged rums up to 35 years old from one of the oldest family rum operations in the Americas. Only 200 bottles of the first edition were produced.

Ron del Barrilito has been made by the Fernndez family at Hacienda Santa Ana in Bayamn, Puerto Rico since 1880 over 140 years of continuous production at the same location using the same methods. For more than a century, the brand released only two expressions: Two Stars (aged 35 years) and Three Stars (aged 610 years). In the brand’s history, no expression had ever been produced from older stock.

The 5 Star Reserva Suprema changed that: master blender M. Luis Planas assembled a one-of-a-kind blend from the family’s oldest Oloroso white oak cask reserves rums aged up to 35 years in a single family operation. The result, in the first 200 bottles, reflects what more than three decades of aging in Puerto Rico’s tropical climate produces: full body with strong wood backbone, aromas of plums, bananas, almonds, vanilla, and caramelized sugar cane, exceptional smoothness on the palate, and a natural sweetness with a smoky wood finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What makes Ron del Barrilito unique among rum producers? Ron del Barrilito has been continuously produced at the same family estate in Bayamn, Puerto Rico for over 140 years one of the longest unbroken family rum operations in the Americas. The Fernndez family has never sold the brand or the property. The combination of 140+ years of institutional knowledge, a single location, and the specific microclimate of Bayamn produces a rum with a character found nowhere else.
  • What is Oloroso oak aging? Oloroso is a style of sherry from Jerez, Spain, aged in American oak under an oxidative process rather than the biological aging of Fino. Oloroso casks impart nutty, dried fruit, and dark wood character to spirits aged in them. The combination of Oloroso cask character and 35 years of Puerto Rico’s tropical climate produces an extraordinarily complex result.
  • How does tropical aging affect rum differently from Scotch or bourbon? Puerto Rico’s warm, humid climate dramatically accelerates maturation compared to Scotland or Kentucky. The angel’s share (evaporation) rate in tropical climates is 810% annually vs. 23% in temperate climates, meaning a 35-year tropical rum has experienced the equivalent concentration of a much older Scotch. The result is deeper color, richer flavor, and more dramatic oak integration.
  • Is the 5 Star Reserva Suprema still available? In very limited quantities. The first edition of 200 bottles has been depleted; subsequent small releases have followed but remain extremely limited.
