Selbach Oster Riesling Kabinett 2022 750ml

Selbach-Oster is a German wine producer located in the Mosel Valley, a wine region famous for extremely steep slopes, slate soils, and Riesling. The Selbach family has been producing wine in the region for more than 400 years.

Selbach-Oster owns 24 hectares (59 acres) of well-known vineyard land planted mainly to ungrafted Riesling and some Pinot Blanc in the Middle Mosel. Regarded as the “golden mile”, the steep, south-facing hectares stretch from Zeltingen to Bernkastel and include the vineyards Zeltinger Himmelreich, Zeltinger Schlossberg, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Graacher Domprobst.

Riesling is considered one of the world’s greatest white wine varieties, aromatic, fresh and often caught between the purity of its German iterations to the complexity of its Alsatian counterparts. But, existing worldwide in range of styles from dry to sweet, it frequently surpasses glib pronouncements at all levels.

Loved by wine critics but a stranger to broad commercial appeal, Riesling is a light-skinned, aromatic grape of German origin which is also responsible for some of Germany’s greatest, and longest-lived, white wines. Riesling is made in a range of styles but generally produces crystalline, aromatic white wines with notes of citrus, wax and lanolin, with a light to medium body and plenty of fresh acidity.

An elegant and filigree riesling Kabinett with terrific slatey minerality. Easily enough ripeness, but the stunningly fresh acidity is the most important aspect of this incredibly vibrant Kabinett. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The 2022 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett opens with a very elegant and finely flinty bouquet of weathered slate. Mouth-filling, vital and with nervous mineral grip and tension, this is a lightweight but lush wine to be cellared for at least three more years. It is saline and expressive yet still too tight to show its best talents. 8.5% stated alcohol. Screw cap closure. Tasted at the domaine in November 2023.

The 2022 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Kabinett is from higher-lying parcels above the rocky outcrops. The nose has a sense of mossy, wet stone, pale peach and lemon. The palate focuses on peach and lemon, with beautifully streamlined sweetness, citric, pure, direct, and linear. Very energetic, beautifully elegant, measured and long. Very balanced, with 34g/L of sweetness.
